Dr. Cutler and the Athena Institute have run a monthly ad in the back of Smithsonian magazine for some years now (p. 84, July 2009). She evidently has formulated “pheromone” “unscented fragrance additives for men and women” –nostrums to increase affection–essentially, love potions. Her claims are supported by the more or less anonymous Jacques (“I am a physician…”) and Gene (“Both my wife and I use your products and feel we are starting a new relationship with each other”). I would be VERY leery of anything this woman has to say!

Initially I gave this book two stars, but added one because of the hormone information. If you have to take hormones, this book is very informative and well-researched. Unfortunately a lot of the information is presented in tables, which are almost impossible to read in the Kindle version.
The sections of this book on individual diseases and ailments are barely worth reading. The author makes a lot of assertions that are not well-backed-up by research (such as recommending against sex during menstruation because it may be “linked to” endometriosis) and some that are too broad to be useful (“Women have a lot of sexual problems”). While the author makes the important point that post-menopausal sexual issues may be at least partly due to one’s partner and not hormones, she invariably assumes that partner is male. In addition, the “all hysterectomies are evil” viewpoint is repetitive to the point of being overwhelming. It’s too bad the author couldn’t have given us the hormonal information in a clear context without extraneous opinions.

This book covers it all; how to live a healthier lifestyle, how to have stronger bones, improve your heart health, face pelvic problems and other issues as we age, approach the options of HRT and ask the right questions about it. Dr. Cutler takes the complex, current science and makes it comprehensive — it’s important material. We need it.

Amid all the confusion, finally a clear, research-based book, that’s readable, about this HUGE issue for us mid-life women. Our doctors are doing us a disservice by not recommending Hormone Therapy (HT) more frequently and at a younger age, especially for those of us with a family history of heart disease and osteoporosis. (Ladies, the bone degeneration starts with perimenopause in our 40s!)
Dr Cutler dissects the research studies for us and sorts out the pros and cons of the different hormones and delivery systems (pills, gels, etc)She also looks at alternatives and has great advice on what vitamins and minerals and foods our bodies need to be our best. She explains the relationship between our sex lives and hormone levels. (Regular sex is very good for us…)
She throws light on the whole issue of “bio-identicals” which many companies are exploiting for their own profit.
Dr Cutler looks carefully at the WHI study that caused the great stir in 2002 and takes apart the results for us.
Every woman past her 40th birthday should study this book

This medical researcher with a PH.D provides clear, sensible, science-based answers about HRT and alternative treatments for menopause in her newly released (ie: up-to-date) book. She reports on years of research studies, provides summary/conclusions and leaves you with a clear understanding. As a result, I plan to resume bio-identical HRT.
